Traceland is an interactive video installation about tracing meta data and personal data by the Morons of Motion. We adress contemporary issues such as digital civil rights and governmental observation practices. We are still working on the documentation, feel free to register on the homepage to be part of the project with your data! http://traceland.7dex.de/

------------------

The walkable interactive installation TRACELAND simulates the interaction between individuals and their data (and alien data bases) within the internet. It is supposed to illustrate the "everyday-traces" of personal information, people leave behind using their online mobile devices, credit cards etc. - a starting point for working with "big data" and behavioral prediction.

Kinect cameras will capture the participants. Via motion tracking, the movement of the participants within the designated space is digitally analysed and visually processed. The illustrative result of this processing will be projected on a large widescreen: Silhouettes or avatars of people captured and tracked, in a slighly smaller scale than the actual individuals. The silhouettes are not illustrated like a shadow (shades of grey), instead they consist of clusters of text , which is meta and personal data.
Futhermore the avatars steadily emit text fragments of internet data into the data cloud above their heads. When people stand still a fairly small amount of data is emitted and in correlation to their speed of movement, more and more text fragments will be emitted. The faster one moves, the more data will be emitted (just like you leave more digital traces when you use your online devices at a high frequency).
The abstract data cloud is a field of magnetic force, sucking up the data emitted by the avatars and networked,
mingling with it visually. Not only the speed of the movement of the participants will be analysed and processed. Also ducking down or strechting out will be valued. So if a participant is very small, less data will be emitted and if one comes closer or stretches out, more data will will emitted. This is supposed to visualize that not only the speed or frequency of usage determines the amout of data a person reveals, but also the overall participation or non-participation in the digital world will lead to different results concerning the data that will be produced and stored.

The "data" the avatars as well as the emitted text fragments are fictional, though based on average bits of information people are revealing on various occasions (filling out online-forms, registering for specific websites, participating in social media sites, newsletters, search request and others). The data appearing in our installation comes from a data base which we have set up previously.
